I love cheesesteaks, I could eat one every day and every meal, sometimes I do actually. My favorite Philly steak is at Phil's on I think 23rd and Passyunk (might be 22nd I forget). It's very similar to Geno's but I think its a little better, little more meat and a little cheaper. Classic walk up window with no inside or seating, seperate window for soda/fries and you order "wiz/wit, american/without", ect. The people keep it quick and are no overly friendly, which I think is exactly how a good steak place should be. I want to get my steak quick and easy, put my own ketchup on and eat it standing up outside. I think the whole experience is half of why I like the steak so much. Also, they have great birch beer that goes along great with the steak although I will say I'm not a huge fan of the fries or cheese-fries. Little tip, instead of fries go with the pizza roll you can order at the french fry window. Its only $1.50 and its a great little side as opposed to the fries.
Geno's is a close second. I tried my first Pat's the other night but was not a huge fan, it will be my last trip because I will always go to Geno's if I'm on the block. Pat's put the cheese on top of the meat...what's up with that?
Check out the new restaurant Baby Blues Barbecue on 34th and Sansom street in University City. It is for sure the best barbecue in Philly! They have three locations out in California that have been extremely successful, frequently visited by all the stars and athletes out in LA. Some Eagles players were in the Philly location the other night and "The Most Interesting Man in the World" from the Dos Equis commercial has also been in there multiple nights. You gotta get the ribs, can't beat it and they have great barbecue sauces to go along with the huge portions. The sides are also incredible, my favorite being the Mac-n-cheese.
My favorite pizza is the famous upside down pizza at Pica's in Upper Darby. Gotta show my love for Delco when talking about pizza. The plain is great but also try to pepperoni if you haven't yet. A lot of people also like to go with the double cheese.
If you are in University City and need some lunch, hit up the lunch trucks on Spruce Street between 34-38th street. Please do not go to WaWa and get a subpar sandwich for more money when you can get a great hoagie or steak for four dollars from a food cart. Hemo's, right outside the UPenn dorms has the best grilled chicken sandwich you have ever had, and you gotta get his special Hemo sauce.
The best breakfast is Hannah's Breakfast Nook on Eagle Rd right by the intersection with Darby Rd right in Havertown, which is right next to Upper Darby, again in Delco. Classic breakfast foods, simply can't go wrong with the little place with great atmosphere.
When you talk water ice and ice cream I would have to pick Pop's Water Ice on Eagle Rd. in Havertown as well. They don't have the chunks in the water ice like Rita's (which I know some people love, I'm the opposite, although I do love Misto's) and also have hard/soft ice cream. The best is the Pop's Sundae, just a superb ice cream sundae. --Buzzy
Phils is deffinetly a top tier steak place, but you need to try the Original Jims Steaks on 63rd in Overbrook "wit" the original grill that has a bullet hole in it.
ReplyDeleteDont take this the wrong way buzz, I know its a neighborhood establishment and its real cheap but I will never eat at Hannahs again the service is terrible, the dishes are always dirty and a bug once crawled out of my PHood, I understand the concept of a place but not somewhere Ill be telling a tourist to go eat breakfast...Try Ming's on Burmont Rd next to Janos
Chief Baby Blues has 3 locations in Cali
ReplyDeleteShit my bad bul, i thought they only had 2
ReplyDeleteIf you are ever in Roxborough give Dalessandro's a try on the corner of Henry and Wendover. It's right down the street from Roman's "baseball field." Great steaks!
