Heisman Trophy
Cam Newton of the Auburn Tigers won the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the best play in college football. This was no surprise, he was clearly the best player all year and has led his team to a number one ranking as well as the National Championship game. The only problem I have is that over 100 ballots did not include Newton or some ranked him as 2nd or 3rd place. That is completely ridiculous because there was not one individual performer who could compare to Newton's leading rushing in the SEC (as a quarterback) and nation's highest passer rater season. Not only did he have this great individual season and lead his team to an undefeated season, he did it in the toughest conference in the country. The votes he did not receive were from voters who were penalizing him for off the field issues. Apparently his father broke NCAA rules by asking schools who were recruiting his son for money. However, both the NCAA and the SEC cleared Newton himself of any wrong-doing before the voting took place. I don't understand how the voters could somehow take the situation into their own hands, without all the facts and decide that they are going to punish the player themselves because they have the power to vote for Heisman. Those people are complete clowns because they either think that they stand on some higher moral ground or they just do not know football because Newton should have received every number one vote. I honestly think that anyone who left him off the ballot should not be allowed to vote again. You cannot take punishment into your own hands or deal with anything other than the facts, the NCAA cleared Cam Newton of any wrongdoing. Regardless of the rumors that are going around, that means he did nothing wrong. I hope he just goes to the NFL and can leave all of the controversy behind him. He already has a Heisman trophy, he may get a National Championship, he should head to the League. I know the debate will start about whether he will be effective in the NFL but Mike Vick is a great example of how a running quarterback with a good arm can be almost as effective in the pros and he was in college. Unlike Tebow who came out last year, Newton is a better runner on the edge and also has a better throwing motion/arm strength. --Buzzy
